Endodontics is the discipline of dentistry that involves the treatment of the tissue (pulp) inside of the tooth. Factors such as trauma, severe gum disease or deep toothd ecay can cause the tooth pulp to become infected or destroyed, rendering a need for endodontic treatment.
A root canal is a procedure that extracts decayed pulp from the central part of the tooth, reshapes the canal and replaces it with strengthening filler. A root canal can preserve the tooth and retain its original integrity, where in the past, it would have to be pulled. Once the tooth has been root canaled, treatment usually follows with restoring and preserving the root tooth structure.
